Word Study Launch

wordstudy    In our class, we have started our Word Study program. Based on a diagnostic spelling test each student did in September, several Word Study groupings were established.

This current week, we all started with the same words (long e patterns) so we could get used to the routines and expectations of how Word Study is run.

How does it work?

Students are given a new sort each Monday where they learn about different aspects and features of the words they received. Throughout the week, students are asked to complete various activities from their ‘Homework Menu’ to practice using their words in different ways, and on Friday, we will have a spelling assessment.

In the pictures below, we are working with a buddy to complete the activity called “Blind Sort with a Buddy”. This is where one person reads the words and the partner writes them down in the correct category, aiming to spell them correctly, of course!

Word Study

Word study is like spelling but in a different way. What is word study? Well we are going to tell you! Word study is when our whole class splits into groups. The easy group, the medium group, and the hard group. (Actually, Miss B. determined our group based on a spelling assessment at the start of the year). Each group is taught a lesson on a particular rule or concept in spelling, we will get different words and study them for a week. We have different activities that we complete each day of the week so we get practice using the words. Then on Friday we will have a test. On Monday we will get new words and do the same thing again.

Word Study begins

Hi Parents;

Today we launched (finally!!) into our Word Study lessons and activities. Based on a diagnostic spelling test your child did earlier this year, several Word Study groupings were established. Students are given a new sort each Monday where they learn about different aspects and features of the words they received. Throughout the week, students are asked to complete various activities (this is glued into their green notebook) to practice using their words in different ways, and on Friday, they will have a spelling assessment.

I encourage you to ask your child to talk about their word study words with you!
