Books are Delicious

Today our classroom was transformed into a sort of literary cafe as students were invited to their very first BOOK TASTING event of the school year. A book tasting gives students the opportunity to sample some juicy reads in a short period of time and come away with a wish list of titles. It’s a great way to let young readers sample different authors, genres, and series. After all, books are a lot like food—you won’t know if you like something until you try it!

Chef Sully made an appearance, flying in from France. Students noted she looked a lot like her sisterly friend, Mrs. Sullivan. They even shop at the same clothing stores, apparently! Chef Sully even brought a wee little gift for each student–a little souvenir from Paris.

We ‘sampled’ several different genres of books including:

  • Poetry
  • Mystery
  • Nonfiction
  • Biography

See you next time, Chef Sully!

Data Detectives

In Math, we are learning all about data.

What is data? Data is information. We use information all around us all the time. We collect data, we can analyze it, share it, and so on! We collect data for ourselves. For instance, when we step outside, the temperature tells us if we should put a coat on or not. We can collect data on our classmates by asking them what shoe size they wear or what time they go to bed.

Data often gives us helpful information and helps us make decisions.

We have been learning how to sort data into Venn Diagrams or Carroll diagrams, make bar graphs, pictographs, how to find the mode and mean (or average). This week, we will collect our own data on each other by asking an interview question. Then we will graph it!

In math, we usually begin the week with a lesson and then the rest of the week, we practice this skill in small groups. We rotate through 5 different “stations” ranging from seat work practice, to computer work, to group work, to math journalling, and practicing with the teacher.

What is a question you’d like to ask your classmates?

Happy Summer!

The year has wrapped and the curtain has closed. What a wonderful group of students this year. I feel so blessed and grateful to have spent the year with you.

Enjoy your summer…you deserve it!

Big hugs,

Mrs. Sullivan

Ready to Dance!

We have been busy preparing to present our dance for YOU and for several classes who came to see us strut our stuff!

The students learned some simple choreography but also created their own dance moves and when we put it all together, we had our complete disco dance. We learned some classic disco moves (can you spot them?) and had some fun along the way. That’s what dance is all about.

The Bee Gees were our inspiration. The song is a version of Stayin’ Alive.

Congratulations Grade 3s! Wow!

Check it out! (Sorry for the shakiness).

Welcome to Advent

The word Advent comes from the Latin word Adventus which means “a coming”. It is a 4 week season leading up to Christmas and it is dedicated to the anticipation of Jesus’ birth.

Last week, students brought home their Advent wreaths and we lit the first purple candle.

In the season of Advent, we are reminded to be patient, think of others, and remember to truly be mindful of what the season is all about–Jesus. We can become consumed by the shopping, decorations, and so on, but our family, friends, and taking care of each other is also very important.

The Advent wreath is a countdown of sorts to Jesus’ birthday. The 3 purple candles and 1 pink candle represent the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. Each week we will be lighting one more candle on our classroom wreath and will share in prayer and song together.

We Give Thanks

Thanksgiving is a favourite holiday for many of our classmates. We enjoy spending time with our loved ones and gathering together to break bread, savouring all the delicious foods many hands have prepared.

The students did a wonderful job writing a paragraph about what they like about thanksgiving and who they are thankful for. Impressive!

We are so blessed to live where we do and to have so much support and love around us.

What are you thankful for?
