Moving in Math

indexHi bloggers!

We wanted to share something we did in math class today, and will continue to use in various other subjects throughout the year. It’s called Quiz, Quiz, Trade. Maybe you’ve heard of it, maybe not.

It’s a really good way of getting students engaged and talking to each other about mathematics. This activity encourages students to check each other’s answers and help each other out in a meaningful and positive way. It is often during those little conversations between students that the deepest learning can take place. And when they can be used to spice up a rather dull topic, like rounding numbers, then even better!

The way it works is that each student has a card with a question on the front and an answer on the back. Each student walks around with their hand up and finds someone else with their hand up. This is how we find a partner. We do ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ to determine who goes first. We take turns asking the question, and possibly stepping in to coach our partner if they get stuck. We check that our partner’s answer matches the answer on the back of the card and praise them. Next, it is the other partner’s turn. Finally, we trade cards and continue on our search for a different partner.

Have a look at us in action!
