Moving Along In November

We’re a very busy class learning and exploring each and every day. Have a look at our learning over the last week or so…

Rubbing balloons on our heads may look weird, but we were doing a science experiment to try to create static electricity using friction. Unfortunately, we learned that not all science experiments work they way they’re supposed to and our balloons were quite stubborn, not sticking to the walls like they should have.

One of our gym classes was ‘bootcamp style’ where stations were set up and students circulated through each station, getting our sweat on while the music motivated us to keep moving! Situps/pushups, jump-rope, bean bag toss, soccer dribbling, and so much more!

Our personal narrative unit had us getting our minds warmed up while we practiced storytelling our chosen idea to a friend. We then learned about drafting leads or introductions–the HOOK that will capture a reader’s attention. Mrs. S models for us what a lead can sound like and we learned about different ways to start a narrative. We were asked to write 2 different leads and pick the best one.

Gathering and making sense of data is our next unit in math. Our focus today was on Venn Diagrams. We were sorting information like who liked chocolate vs. vanilla, siblings & pets, and much more. We used magnetic pictures of ourselves to come up to the board and decide where we would place ourselves on the Venn Diagram. We also used sticky notes to sort numbers.

We had a lovely visitor today from the Rotary Club. The grade 3s and 4s from the split classes were given student dictionaries to keep! We learned a bit about what the Rotary Club does and how a dictionary can help us.

We are Thankful

It’s Thanksgiving this weekend and today we gathered together to express our gratitude for all that we have. Mrs. C’s class and Mr. M’s class joined us in the library and we celebrated together with song and prayer.

It’s always special when we can gather together and share in the experience. It was extra special that some of our parents joined us as well. Thank you!

We came back to class and enjoyed a little treat Mrs. S brought in …. apple crisp and ice cream!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Our Turkey Bingo took place in the afternoon and someone from our class won a turkey!! Congratulations!

Here are the 2 songs we listened to during our liturgy:

What are you thankful for?

Welcome Chris Bray

Today our school was fortunate enough to welcome a very special guest–Chris Bray. Chris is a Canadian songwriter, Christian leader, and speaker. Chris enlightened us and inspired us with his messages of faith and that we truly are God’s children.

He led us through some beautiful songs, taught us some actions to go along with the songs, and helped us celebrate Catholic Education Week.

Here’s a sample of one of his hit songs.

Miracles

What is a miracle? Why do they happen? Who do they happen to? What were Jesus’ miracles? What miracles happen nowadays?

The Grotto at Lourdes We’ve been exploring these questions and investigating their answers over the past few weeks. Today, we learned about St. Bernadette and the apparitions of the Virgin Mary at a grotto in Lourdes, France in 1858. Mary appeared to Bernadette 18 different times! We call these apparitions.

Here is a short video clip of the 1943 movie The Song of Bernadette which shows the first time Mary appeared to Bernadette in the grotto.

Free to Be Potluck

Our themed potluck Free to Be” was such a success! This was a special celebration to culminate our learning in our Social Studies unit which was all about the diverse communities within Canada. It also complimented our Family Life unit where each student researched and recognized their unique cultural backgrounds.

A big thank you to all the families who helped prepare the delicious treats and eats for our class. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the interesting and unique dishes some of our students prepared. We each made a small flag to  represent our cultures and waved them with pride!

What’s Your Family History?

In Family Life, we were learning about the importance of our heritage and how it shapes us and influences who we are. Students were asked to gather research by interviewing their family members about their history. Afterwards, they began to think of symbols that would represent various elements or parts of their history. Finally, they designed and built a totem pole to share their results.

Have a look at all the hard work and thought that went into building these totem poles. Well done Grade 6s!

Advent

Advent is one of the 7 Catholic church seasons and begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This year (2015) it started on Sunday, November 29th and will end on Thursday, December 24th which is Christmas eve.

Do you know what the word Advent means? Advent

Well if you didn’t it means “coming” or “arrival.” During Advent we as Christians focus on preparing for the birth of Jesus.

The season of Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, preparation and longing. There is wanting a for deliverance from the evils of the world, first expressed by Israelite slaves of Egypt.

The main colour of Advent is purple. This is the colour of penitence, fasting and royalty welcoming the Advent king, Jesus.

At the beginning of Advent we normally put up an Advent wreath with 3 purple candles and 1 pink candle decorated with a purple ribbon or bow around it. The Advent wreath is a circle to show that God’s love has no beginning and no end. Wreaths are made out of fake or real pine needles from an evergreen tree because they never lose their needles and are always the same. This shows that God’s love will always be the same and never change.

What are some ways you celebrate Advent?

What does Advent mean to you?

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is a time to come together and remember the men and women who fought so bravely for our freedom. Our school had a great Remembrance Day Ceremony.  We had two special guests, one a veteran, and the other a current serving member, Sergeant Frank Guadio, and Sergeant White-Dinkel.

We began our liturgy in prayer, song, and one of our classmates, Emma, performed a special dance. We also performed a choral reading of In Flander’s Fields.

They both had some amazing things to say. Thank you to all the Armed Forces members current and in the past who keep fighting for our freedom and that this nation and other nations might live.

Have a look at some of the pictures from our special celebration.

CHRISTMAS OR X-MAS?

Presepe 2013

What a wonderful season… Christmas. When you think of Christmas, what do you think of? Presents?… Santa?… Christmas Trees?… Decorations?… Did you think of Christ? The real question is what do you call this season, Christmas or X-Mas?

I call it Christmas! I mean, the word Christmas has Christ in it (CHRISTmas). Christ is what Christmas is all about. If you think X-Mas, why?…

The word Christmas means the Lord’s Blessing, and the celebration of the Eucharist. Did you know that?

“I celebrate the day… That YOU were born to die… So I could one day pray for YOU to save my life.” (Relient K – I Celebrate The Day)

Sometimes you have to think back and remember what Christmas is actually about and why we celebrate it every year. On Christmas morning, when you first look under your tree, think about what day this day is really all about…

Now, after reading my post, what do you call this season? Why?

What special way do celebrate the “Christ” in the Christmas season?

We Will Follow

How can you follow Jesus?

Well, as a class we came up with many ideas, because on Wednesday, Emma, Gabi, and Calvin led our class in a prayer service all about following Jesus.

IMG_4887 IMG_4888 IMG_4889We began with an opening prayer. After, we read two bible readings that reflected on following Jesus. We had the class do an activity where they coloured a footstep one colour and then wrote an example of how you can follow Jesus. This craft had a twist which was with whatever colour you chose (example, red) you wrote the idea using the colours first letter (example, respect).

We finished with a beautiful song and a prayer that we made. We hoped that everyone enjoyed and learned something during our prayer service.

When were some times you have followed in Jesus’ footsteps?
