Representing Numbers and Math Games

Playing math games is a great way to reinforce math concepts learned in class and to practice our skills while building relationships with our classmates. We have 1 week left of our first unit on learning about numbers to 1000. We’ve been comparing, ordering, drawing pictures using base 10 blocks, decomposing numbers, writing them in words, placing them on a number line, and much more!

Below, we are seen playing a game called Place Value War and Race to a Flat.

Do you have a favourite math game?

A Work of Heart

We are learning to be wide awake as writers and pay attention to what amazing stories we have to tell from our own lives. Our first unit is writing a personal narrative which is a true story about something that happened in our lives.

Students have been gathering ideas in their notebooks and finally we have chosen the one idea we will nurture and develop over the next short while. We will learn to write a lead, add juicy details, maybe add some dialogue, and learn how to make a conclusion to our story.

Some ideas students have thought of include:

  • searching for seashells at the beach
  • going on a rollercoaster for the first time
  • visiting Grandma and Grandpa’s boat
  • going bowling and scoring my highest goal ever

There are so many wonderful stories we can tell from our own own lives. We can’t wait to publish them! Stay tuned.

In the pictures below, we are story-telling. We are using elaboration and asking questions of our partner to tell us more about the event in our life that we are writing about.

Kindergarten Buddies

We were so thrilled to learn that we were going to be buddies with the kindergarten class in Miss Swift’s class! We are learning this year to take on more leadership roles and be good role models for our school community, especially the younger classes.

We are excited for this opportunity to show good leadership skills and are ready to help with reading, crafts, and much more!

We debriefed after our first visit the other day and we agreed that we really enjoyed meeting our new friends and liked helping them create a Thanksgiving craft. Great job, Grade 3s!

We Give Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving to all our families and our community! We have so many things we are grateful for, especially our family, friends, and our health.

Today, we started the day with a liturgy in the gym, then our Turkey Trot, and finally Turkey BINGO. Lyla from our class won some prizes while a few of us came so close. Bravo!

It was a full day and we are thankful for all of our opportunities provided for us.

  • We are thankful for our legs that allow us to walk and run.
  • We are thankful for our ears, mind, and heart to hear the word of God.
  • We are thankful for our eyes and mind to allow us to play games such as BINGO.
  • We are thankful to our class family for cheering for us as we worked hard to cross the finish line.

Have a wonderful weekend! Gobble, gobble.

Orange Shirt Day 2023

Each year, we honour and show that we are thinking about the indigenous children and families who were mistreated for many years through the residential school system. We want them to know they matter and their stories are being heard and talked about.

We watched this video in class and had some good discussion about why we wear orange t-shirts.

The actual day to wear orange is September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Flashlight Friday

Our class loves to read! Nearly every day, we read in class from books we bring from home or from our class library. We made our own bookmarks and love to get lost in the different worlds and lives of the characters we read about.

Today, we had our first Flashlight Friday! We turned off the lights, closed our blinds, and turned on our flashlights to begin reading in the dark. We chose our reading spots and snuggled in with a good book or two.

Have you ever read under the sheets at bedtime with a flashlight? What about in a fort you made?

What’s your favourite way to read a good book?

Our First Mystery Reader Was…

Last Friday we had a special guest visit our classroom to read us a story. All week, clues about who our Mystery Reader was had been shared with us and we had some guesses as to who we thought it was. It was Mrs. Bryant, our V.P!

She read a wonderful book called The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson. We love listening to stories. Who will our next Mystery Reader be? Hmm…

Terry Fox Run

The annual Terry Fox Run at our school took place recently and we were ready to make him proud! We gave it our best effort to run for all those affected by cancer, including perhaps family members, family friends, and even Terry himself.

It was a beautiful morning for our event. Have a look at some of our photos! Way to go!

Dot Day 2023

Every September the 15th ish, we celebrate Dot Day–a day where we celebrate how we can make our mark in the world. It is based on the book called The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the book. We listened to a message from the author and enjoyed listening to a song written about the book. Check it out below.

Today, we found our classmates wearing dots in their hair, on their socks, in their lunches, and even on their nails!

It was a beautiful day outside so we drew dots outside with chalk, made dot headbands, delivered dot treats to staff members, made dot art, and much more.

I hope everyone had a great day! Until next year…

Open House

A big thanks to all the families who came to our Open House! It was nice to see so many of you and share our learning space with you. Perhaps you even sampled some of the food trucks on site.

Our students had made a self-portrait and parents had to guess which one was their child…some of you guessed correctly on the first try…impressive!

Have a look at our portraits!
