Thank You, Mr. Falker

Social issues are all around us…from bullying to dealing with loss.

We’ve been learning about social issues in our Reading Workshop

classes by reading in book clubs. One of the books we read aloud

was called Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Pollaco which deals with

the issue of fitting in and illiteracy.

Have you read this book before? If not, it’s such a great book to read

on your own, or with your class! Actually, if you click on this link, you will be directed to a website where celebrities read books to you…

and guess what? Thank You, Mr. Falker is one of them! Check it out!

Here is a book trailer I made to introduce you to the book in case

you haven’t read it yet!

Happy Reading!

Miss B.

How to Add an Image to Your Post

Dear Bloggers,

If you’ve ever wanted to add a picture to your blog but wondered how to do this properly, here is a great video that teaches you how to do this. If you take your own photo, you don’t really need to give yourself credit. But, if you want to get a photo that someone else has posted on the web, you first need their permission. That’s really hard to do, especially if you don’t know how to reach the person.

A few great places to get free photos that people WANT and more importantly, ALLOW you to use include:

www.compfight.com and search.creativecommons.org

Even though you physically can copy a photo from Google, let’s say, it doesn’t mean you’re ALLOWED to. That’s why the above websites are so great.

Check out the video below that walks you through exactly how to insert a picture AND give credit to the person who took it.

Keep up the great work, bloggers!

The Blue Morpha Butterfly

The Blue Morpha Butterfly, is an amazing creature- it has a sleek black body, with beautiful, graceful blue wings. It’s one of my favourite types of butterflies. It lives in South America. Their wingspan can be up to 13-17 centimeters! That’s around half of a ruler!

Some of their predators including baby jaguars and birds that kill them, and fish when they are near water. But the worst enemy is humans. Yes that’s right, humans are the worst predators to the Blue Morpha. Humans go into their habitat and put them into glass containers and sell them. Just think– your a Morpho Butterfly. A peaceful creature. Never did anything  wrong to hurt the world. Then, all of a sudden, out of nowhere you get captured by a very mean person and he puts you in a jar.

” Where am I? Where are they taking me?” Your thinking. You see the man trading money for you. Then he gives you away, like you don’t even exist. Well that is what a Morpho Butterfly would think.

You can help save Blue Morpho Butterflies and learn a lot about them too. Just go to http://www.amersol.edu.pe/ms/7th/7block/jungle_research/new_cards/28/report28ms.html.

I hope you enjoyed reading my Post on Blue Morpho Butterflies. Remember, I believe that it only takes one to change the world.

Please welcome your “LONDON KNIGHTS”!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever seen the London knights play in your life??

Well if you want to go, go soon and see if they can get their second one of these preaches trophies like this one!     Well they are one of the bests team’s in the world right now! So get down their and watch them well they are still amazing!!! They are so good that they haven’t lost two straight games which is awesome for them. Dale Hunter (once the head coach of the knights) is now the head coach of the Washington Capitals! So Mark Hunter’s brother is now the head coach of the Knights and the announcer said that the have the exact same coaching style even though they are 2 different people!!!!! This is probably because they coached together for a very long time. I have seasons tickets this year and I love them!!! The John Labat Center has three floors

I sit in the first level so I  might even be in the picture!!!!! Do you like the knights?????? If you don’t, I hope I have convinced you too!

We Are Builders

In Room 21, we love to build things! We build our faith, in Writing, we build stories, in Reading, we build ideas, and recently in Science class, we built what we called a “Come Back Can”. In our unit called Conservation of Energy, we are learning all about energy! We are learning about different kinds of energy such as magnetic, gravitational, electric, sound, light, and so on. We understand that energy can transform from one form to another. And this is exactly what we were demonstrating when we built our Come Back Can. Each table group built the can using the following materials:

  • one empty coffee can or tea container that can roll easily
  • one elastic band a teeny bit longer than the can itself
  • one hammer
  • one nail to poke a wide enough hole through the top and bottom of the can
  • 2 smaller nails or thick toothpicks
  • several nuts and bolts
  • tape

Take a look at us building these cans!

Not all groups were entirely successful, but a few groups were! Take a look at what happened when we rolled the can…

Do you know Bill Nye? Take a look at how he builds a variety of different sized come-back cans! Very cool!

Chains!!!!!!

Hey everyone !!

On Ash Wednesday we had to do an activity in class where we were given an envelope full of 40 strips of paper. Each strip had an act of kindness, Bible reading, or some kind of activity we could do each day for Lent. Each “link” on the chain was for each of the 40 days of Lent to help us prepare our hearts and minds for Easter.

I thought they were a little difficult to link together because we had to glue them, but for Douglas in our class, it took him 30 seconds! There  were 40 pieces of paper we had to glued and cut.I was a pretty hard job.

Some people were too lazy to do it so they asked for help…..like me. Anyways Miss B DID a HARD job on printing, cutting, and putting that paper inside 27 envelopes!!   I think everybody did a great job and I think Miss B. really wanted us to work hard on this project and I also think we should give a big  thanks to Miss B.

Did you guys see the pile of chains in the back table? It was a HUGE pile with 104 pieces… I think.

What are you giving up for Lent?

V.I.P Field Trip!

 Hello Bloggers,

Earlier this week, all of the Gr.6 students went on a field trip for V.I.P. V.I.P stands for Value Influences Peers. On the field trip a great band played called Duty Calls. Their songs where fantastic. Then we saw a police dog named Axe who was a German Shepherd and the police told us how they trained the dogs, how they catch a criminal, and what the dogs do after they retire. After that, a speaker who works at a hospital talked about impaired driving and being safe on the road. Later, a woman from the county jail came to talk about what happens when you go to jail. Last, a speaker named Leroy talked to us about racism and how to treat people . This was a very FUN field trip!
